But How Hire Part-time Employees could be a challenge. Moreover, some obstacles come with trying to fill these part-time positions.

To start with, most job-seekers always seek an avenue to make their role permanent within your business.

Meanwhile, an ideal part-time worker should be intelligent, experienced, and reliable.

Therefore, hiring a part-time worker involves a little more skill than you might have predicted. A creative approach might be required.

Steps to Hire a Part-Time Employee

Here are the essential steps you should follow to hire part-time employees.

1. Understand the Law

You must be fully aware of the law when hiring part-time employees or workers. A full-time employee is expected to work between 35-45 hours weekly and an average of 40 hours.

Meanwhile, the part-time worker is someone who works less than that.

This means that the individual you wish to employ can only work between 1 and 39 hours weekly. Again, however, this depends on the organization.

2. Prioritize Flexibility

Before you start the hiring process, it is good to consider what the average part-time employee wants.

The first question to ask is, why would someone desire to work part-time? In many situations, it is due to other responsibilities on the part of the individual.

Most of the time, students, entrepreneurs, and retirees, are the ones who desire part-time jobs.

And their main concern is flexibility. They want jobs they can do and also have time for other things.

So as an employee curious about how to hire part-time employees, you should have this in mind.

3. Create a Standard Job Posting

If you want to attract employees who are fit for the job, you must draft an excellent job posting with a detailed description.

A Part-time job description should contain the following:

(I) Specify that it is a part-time job

This may seem obvious, but many companies don’t state what they want to see in a part-time employee.

Not being concrete will lead to confusion and a lot of frustrated individuals. You’ll also have to deal with loads of unnecessary applications.

Hence, mention the term “part-time” in the job title. For good measure, include it at various other points of the job posting.

At the same time, it is compulsory to mention how much importance you place in this position.

Talking about how critical the position is will help potential candidates identify it in higher esteem.

(II) Mention required work hours

When it comes to the hours you expect your part-time employees to work, you must be straightforward.

The number of days a week should be stated for the candidate who wants to work for your organization.

Particular days in mind should be mentioned. Also, the hour duration which an employee is expected to work each week should be stated.

This information can affect the quality of the candidates that you attract.

(III) Mention required education and experience

When posting your jobs, you should always mention the traits, academic achievements, and experience that you desire to see.

This information makes it easier for candidates to know if they are qualified.

(IV) Outline roles

The position they are meant to play in the organization should be known to them so that the candidates will know whether they can carry out such a function.

(V) Mention employee benefits

Part-time workers don’t receive the same benefits as their full-time counterparts when it comes to salaries.

Therefore, you should frame the job more promisingly. Listing the kind of opportunities and rewards attached to the job is essential.

4. Post in the Right Place

After drafting your job posting, you must post them on the platform where your target audience will see them.

This does not mean you should post it on the most important sites. For example, part-time workers might not be found there. You can try small sites instead.

5. Select With Purpose

Many employers can get rather lazy in the hiring process because they undervalue part-time positions.

Employers need smaller jobs to be carried out with accuracy and with high quality of work.

It would be best if you put capable part-time candidates through a similar process as full-time workers.

First, you’ll have to examine your current selection method. Also, identify which elements can be enforced on part-time workers and which ones you can remove. Then your hiring process outline is ready.

6. Don’t Stop the Search

Employers start searching for candidates actively only when they require them. At that time, you are limited by individuals who are accessible for the position.

However, if you hire someone, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the search is over. Keep searching, just in case you need a replacement in the future.
