Call For Applications: STARTS4AFRICA Artist Residency – Nigeria 2024 (up to €35,000)

Attention Artists, Researchers, Technologists, and Multidisciplinary Teams in Nigeria! Here’s an exciting opportunity for you to participate in the inaugural STARTS Residency Program exclusively dedicated to fostering innovation in sub-Saharan Africa at the intersection of Science, Technology, and Arts (STARTS4AFRICA). Through 6-month residencies, STARTS4AFRICA aims to catalyze art-driven innovation in Nigeria.

This groundbreaking initiative invites artists to tackle regional challenges in areas such as Food and Water, Digital Mapping and Speculative Landscapes, Culture and Coding, Wearable Technology and Smart Textiles, Immersive Storytelling, Rethinking Sustainable Construction, and Speculative Urbanism.

Benefits:

  • Up to EUR 35,000 budget for artists’ residencies covering artist fees, organization, and participation in exhibitions/events, as well as other relevant costs for successful project implementation.
  • Access to resources/facilities provided by the Residency Host Institution.
  • Assistance from the Local Expert Group.
  • Participation in an individualized Mentoring Program, including business-specific and tech/sci-related sessions.
  • Access to the Europe-wide S+T+ARTS network.
  • Participation in S+T+ARTS4AFRICA Community events (online and on-site).
  • Consideration for participation in exhibitions showcasing residency outcomes at the Ars Electronica Festival in September 2024 in Linz and/or other festivals and venues upon selection.
  • Visibility through high-impact communication activities to promote artistic output and its innovation spillovers.

Eligibility:

  • Proposals accepted from individual artists or artist collectives with previous experience.
  • Nationals of STARTS4AFRICA covered countries (DR Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Tanzania) or permanent residents in any Sub-Saharan African country.
  • Artistic teams comprising artists from both Europe and Sub-Saharan African countries.

Expected Output from Artists:

  • Production of a tangible, presentable art-driven innovation addressing a local challenge (artwork or artistic prototype).
  • Submission of a descriptive abstract and development plan at the beginning of the residency.
  • Participation in local/national events, masterclasses, and seminars.
  • Active involvement in dissemination and communication efforts of the residency, including social media, articles, and interviews.
  • Contribution to the Impact Assessment Analysis undertaken by STARTS4AFRICA Consortium and Residency Host Institutions.
