An Investigation into the Color Black

Before we get into how to mix black in our guide, let’s take a look at what black is, how we see it, what it stands for, and why it’s better to mix your shades of it. We should have a firm grasp of black and the hues that make it up.

What’s the best way to make black? What two colors combine to become black? What’s the Best Way to Make Black Paint?

To answer what two colors make black, you can utilize a few strategies.

Using Printing primaries as a way to make black

This is the first way we’ll go through, and it involves using primary colors to generate black. The three fundamental colors of red, blue, and yellow are required for this procedure.

To get a thick shade of black, you’ll need equal amounts of each of these color colors, even though it’s a straightforward procedure. This process can be done with any print media, from watercolour to acrylics and oils.

By changing the different shades of main colors that you blend, you can produce multiple hues of black. Lighter shades of primary colors provide a lighter form of black with a brownish hue.

You can also experiment with the equal parts ratio to change the color of your black. It will be a cooler shade of black if you use more blue, and it will be warmer if you use more red.

Creating Black with Printing Primaries

What two colors make black can be answered using printing primaries.

Printers utilize these as their primary colors. When blended in the appropriate quantities, they can produce a nearly pure black. Hansa Yellow, Phthalo blue, and Quinacridone are the precise three hues.

The first is a Hansa Yellow that is both bright and warm. Phthalo blue is a bright hue on the colder side of our light frequency and color temperature. Quinacridone magenta is a more subdued, almost maroon-like red yet vibrant quality.

So, with three hues like these, how do you make black? We’ve found the best way to start by mixing the blue and magenta paints to make a vibrant and warm purple tint. Then, because purple and yellow are complementary hues on opposing sides of the color wheel, the yellow will start to cancel out the purple, leaving us with a very dark tone.

Using a blue base to make black

Though you might spend a lifetime making blackout of primary hues, variety is said to be the spice of life. As the main color, blue is one of the most effective base colors for creating a cool and deep black tone.

The tint of black will vary depending on the specific shade of blue utilized, as well as the numerous colors you add to your black combination.

Using Phthalo Blue and Cadmium Orange as two colors that make black

This approach is ideal for creating a lighter shade of black that resembles a dark grey tint. You can make a light black without adding white by combining these two colors.

Because these two colors are complementary, this color has a magical effect. They are both highly vibrant and active, so they almost entirely cancel each other out.

The brilliant phthalo blue wipes out the brilliant cadmium orange and vice versa. This shade of black transforms into a light black neutral with a faint brown tint. It’s the ideal shade for creating shadows and depth in places that don’t require a particularly dark shade of black.
