Full History of AMC

Now let’s look at some of the notable histories of AMC under these companies:

AMC under Rainbow Programming Services (1984-2002)

AMC was a channel by Rainbow Programming Services, a subsidiary of Cablevision (a former premium American cable television company).

In 1984-2002, AMC focused on airing classic theatrically released movies, majorly those produced before the ’70s. These movies mainly were aired commercial-free, unedited, uncut and uncolored.

When AMC debuted, it replaced a movie-airing channel called Montage, initially offered to Cablevision users.

In July 1988, AMC added its first original programming: Classic Stories From Classic Stars, which featured interviews, after which Star Fact (featuring biographies) followed, and the making of a Classic, which was a mini-documentary also followed.

By 1989, AMC was already available to 39 million subscribers in the U.S. On December 1, 1990, AMC began operating on a 24-hour-a-day schedule.

On September 30, 2002, AMC restructured and rebranded its content type – including movies from all eras to focus on airing movies instead of only films produced before the ’70s.

AMC also settled for the abbreviation ‘AMC’ (dropping off the American Movie Classics name) and created a new slogan that read: ‘TV for Movie People’.

In the same year, AMC restructured its logo to a lower and upper case text in a rectangular outline: AMC, designed by Trollback and Company.

AMC officially became available for Canadian Shaw Cable and Shaw Direct(formerly StarChoice) subscribers on September 1, 2006.

AMC Under AMC Networks

In 2011, Cablevision, the parent company for the-then
Radio Media spun off Rainbow Media into a separate public company: AMC Networks.

However, the founder of Cablevision, Charles Dolan (who later retired in 2020 to the position of chairman emeritus), and his family continued to retain a controlling interest in the company, AMC Networks.

On March 31, 2013, AMC again unveiled a new slogan, which read: “Something More” and also revamped their logo, from a rectangular outlined box to a solid gold block with ‘AMC’ placed in the centre.

AMC Networks, as a separate public entity, owns and operates the following cable channels and Media: IFC( Independent Film Channel), We TV( formerly Romance Classics, for women), SundanceTV(formerly known as Sundance Channel), AMC+, IFC Films Unlimited, Acorn TV, Allblk, Shudder, Sundance Now and HIDIVE.

In 2020, the AMC Networks recruited Switzer Group to redesign its ten-floor headquarters at 11 Penn Plaza, New York.
