2.    Gain experience in planning

  Many event planners start planning smaller events, such as meetings and forums, for small businesses.  Administrative assistants, for example, may assume planning responsibilities in addition to their normal duties.  You can also enter the field in related occupations, such as catering coordinator jobs, to build experience and advance to the role of planner.  These positions will provide expertise in all stages of planning an event and allow time management expertise required in the field.  Since these events are often planned months in advance and have very specific milestones in hiring catering, equipment, decorations, guests, and more, this practice will be vital in preparing the future as an event planner.

  During this period, it is important to gain experience in this area as a party planner.  If you are not sure where to start – start small!  Organize birthday parties, baby shower receptions, weddings, holiday themed events, events for schools or churches, or any other small event where you can start developing the planning experience.  These smaller sized events will be less stressful and any mistakes made in the early days of party planning will be excellent educational opportunities.  Moreover, the hosts of these events will likely be grateful for the help and recommendations and will likely not be upset if the procedures are not executed perfectly.  As your level of experience grows, so does your confidence!  This will help you in the future because small mistakes will seem less catastrophic after you’ve already experienced them, and you likely are already prepared.

  Learn about common computer programs.  Event planners must have the skill to multitask and organize large amounts of information and tasks.  Project management software, as well as spreadsheet and database software, may be helpful in keeping you organized and on the right track with planning duties.  By sticking to a schedule and being able to visualize all the required stages, you’ll ensure nothing is forgotten, and you’ll be able to deal with hiccups quickly and efficiently as they arise.

  Join a professional organization.  If you want to advance in the field of event planning, joining a professional organization, such as Meeting Professionals International (MPI), may be beneficial.  Members of these organizations may find benefits such as networking opportunities, job search resources, and webinars.  These organizations will allow you to expand your clients, learn the tricks of the trade, show your business, and create new opportunities to grow your business.

3.    Get your wedding planning certification

  Event planning certification assignments may help you stand out from potential employers.  Content on certification exams can vary according to event planning areas.  One option is the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) placement test.  CMP credentials are available to conferences, meetings, and exhibition planners.  Before taking the certification exam, you must prove your eligibility;  Three years of experience and recent employment in this field are essential, and one must continue learning the education credits.

  Another certification you may obtain is the Certified Governmental Sociology Professional (CGMP) designation.  You should be eligible with experience and membership in the Association of Governmental Meeting Professionals (SGMP).  Completion of a 3-day course and certification exam is also required.

4.    Specialize professional skills

  According to BLS, there are different types of event planners.  Association planners market the value of annual conferences and other voluntary meetings.  Corporate planners focus on meetings in the company or with business related.  Government meeting planners need to be aware of government regulations to purchase materials and reserve hotels to plan accordingly, while nonprofit planners focus heavily on raising money.
