Historical Inspiration – Queen Amina

Queen Amina, a revered historical figure in the city-state of Zazzau, serves as the guiding inspiration for this project. Much like Egypt’s Cleopatra, Queen Amina epitomizes African womanhood, courage, leadership, and independence. Her legacy transcends time, surviving several generations, thus providing a powerful narrative that resonates with the empowerment and advancement of African women.

At age sixteen, Amina was named Magajiya (heir apparent), and soon after she had distinguished herself as a “leading warrior in her brother’s cavalry” and gained notoriety for her military skills. She is still celebrated today in traditional Hausa praise songs as “Amina daughter of Nikatau, a woman as capable as a man that was able to lead men to war.” After the death of her brother Karami in 1576, Amina became the first queen of the Hausa people, reigning for 34 years.

In an era where digital prowess equates to power and influence, Queen Amina’s legacy is more relevant now than ever. Were she among us today, Queen Amina would undoubtedly be a digitally empowered monarch, harnessing technology to fortify her realm and lead a new generation of women into an age of self-reliance and prosperity.

By naming the initiative after Queen Amina, our mission echoes her indomitable spirit; we strive to empower every girl and woman with the tools to unlock their fullest potential. To be sovereigns in their own right, charting a course toward a fulfilling career, inspiring others, and building a legacy of impact and wealth that will endure for generations. This is the essence of our initiative – to cultivate leaders who, like Queen Amina, can transform their world.
