Alberta is set to launch a new permanent residency scoring system on September 30th, 2024, designed to attract skilled workers through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP).

This initiative aims to streamline the selection process for individuals seeking to apply for worker immigration streams, ensuring alignment with the province’s labor market demands. According to Immigration News Canada (INC), the updated system will help Alberta identify candidates who meet its economic needs, enhancing the overall efficiency of the immigration process.

Key Features of the AAIP Worker EOI System

The Worker Expression of Interest (EOI) system will allow eligible candidates to submit their profiles without any fees, making it accessible for a broad range of applicants. Key factors like education, language skills, work experience, and family connections in Alberta will determine each applicant’s score. Here’s a breakdown of the system:

  • No Fees: Submitting a Worker EOI incurs no fees.
  • Scoring System: Profiles are evaluated based on a point system with categories such as education, language proficiency, work experience, and family ties.
  • Regular Draws: The province will regularly conduct draws, selecting top-scoring candidates whose skills align with Alberta’s labor market demands.

Understanding the EOI Submission Process

Candidates will self-declare their qualifications through the AAIP portal. This means applicants will input details such as their education, work experience, and skills into the online system, where each category contributes to their overall score. The scoring system uses a points grid, with a maximum score of 100.

  • Education: Up to 22 points based on the highest level of education, with additional points if education was completed in Alberta.
  • Language Proficiency: Higher Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) or NCLC levels can score up to 13 points.
  • Work Experience: A maximum of 21 points is awarded for relevant work experience.
  • Family Connections: Up to 8 points are available for candidates with immediate family members residing in Alberta.
  • Economic Factors: Holding a job offer, especially in a high-demand sector, can contribute up to 31 points.

Preparing for Submission

Prospective applicants are advised to review their eligibility and become familiar with the points grid to maximize their score. Here are a few steps to improve chances of selection:

  1. Confirm Eligibility: Ensure you meet the criteria for Alberta’s worker immigration streams.
  2. Understand the Points Grid: Focus on the areas that will boost your overall score, such as education, language skills, and local family connections.
  3. Submit Carefully: Only one EOI can be active at a time, so ensure you withdraw any prior applications before submitting a new one.

Regular draws are scheduled to begin in mid-to-late October 2024, and candidates are encouraged to prepare their profiles well in advance. By understanding Alberta’s labor market needs and tailoring their submissions accordingly, candidates can enhance their chances of being selected for permanent residency. For further updates, candidates can consult the official AAIP website for the latest information.
