Jobs That Won’t Be Replaced By Robots

Since robots are really smart and have a low margin of error compared to humans, people are now looking for jobs that won’t be replaced by robots.  They can do many things better than humans.  This is why machines occupy so many jobs.  The machines are not only cheaper but less of a problem as well.  In addition, they will not demand a salary increase or slack and will work 24/7 without any complaints.

However, artificial intelligence will never be able to replace all human jobs, but it will help employees to be better at some jobs that cannot be fully automated.

Automation today makes it possible to perform tasks more efficiently and accurately than any human being can hope to do.  While this is great for companies, it is an uncomfortable idea for workers who might lose their jobs one day because of it.  A report by consulting firm McKinsey & Company is a wake-up call to today’s workforce: “Almost every job has a possibility of partial automation, as a proportion of its activities can be automated,” the authors conclude.

Advances in robotics and artificial intelligence are paving the way for machines to replace millions of jobs, and not just the manufacturing sector is under threat.  Thanks to increasingly sophisticated and efficient robots, things like hotel room service, cashiers, and taxi drivers will likely be automated over the next 10 years.

Certainly, not every sector of the economy will experience the same level of change.  Jobs that require a lot of physical exertion, especially those performed in “predictable environments”, are most likely to be replaced by programs or machines.  However, there are many jobs that will probably never become obsolete, due to the need for a level of adaptability and creativity that only humans can provide.  Here is a list of seven who qualify.

What jobs will exist in 2030?

The jobs of the future will require three basic elements: science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, creativity, and emotional intelligence.  Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education is indeed important today, but will be essential in the future because unskilled workers will be hit hard by automation.

However, the proliferation of robots and automated systems means an increased need for engineers, technicians and managers to build maintain and monitor the quality of work being done by our robotic workforce.  Human error is always possible, but machines aren’t perfect either.

Likewise, emotional intelligence (EQ) will be of increasing importance, especially for any functions that involve human interaction.  Emotions, understanding, empathy – these are things that automation has yet to interpret and handle appropriately, which means that situations like teachers, doctors, nurses, and therapists are safe.

Creative domains must be safe for the same reasons, as robotic systems may struggle with expressive creativity in areas such as writing, art, design, and music.

Receptionists

An automated touch screen or an AI system can easily replace the role of receptionist.  This is already happening in many modern companies that can afford the technology.  In fact, in two hospitals in Belgium, robots are already doing reception duties.  This 4-foot receptionist robot with a round head and a screen on its chest can recognize the human voice in 20 languages and can detect if it is talking to a man, woman, or child.

Factory worker

Millions of factory jobs are now lost to machinery.  For years, robots have been replacing factory workers in construction and manufacturing, especially in advanced economies.  Certainly, it won’t be long in the future when all companies will be able to use the machines.

Anthropologist and archaeologists

Anthropology and archeology are the areas that take incomplete data and try to extrapolate reasonable conclusions about what happened in the past.  They are studies devoted to enhancing our understanding of humankind, so robots are clearly not suitable for the job.  All they know about humans is what we tell them, and they are unable to formulate creative theories, however, computers are very good at modeling, allowing researchers to scan images of unfinished objects and recover potential images of the whole.

Couriers

Apart from the manufacturing industry, the logistics and transportation sectors will be most affected as automation flourishes in the coming years.  Carriers are now slowly being replaced by drones and robots that are able to travel by air or wheels.  One example is Starship Technologies, which recently launched its small, self-driving robots that can deliver goods from various restaurants in Redwood City to their customers within two miles.

Taxi and Bus Drivers

Thanks to Tesla, semi-autonomous driving is already here and it won’t be long before public transport and taxis are fully autonomous vehicles take over public transport and taxis, even though the government bans autonomous driving in places like India to protect jobs.  However, pilots are safe for now – while autonomous flying technology is in place, passengers will need time to rest while on the move with a computer.

Soldiers

No more human lives lost on the battlefield, soon robots will take charge and fight for us.  During America’s War on Terror in Iraq, the US military was already using automatic soldiers in the form of drones to assassinate enemies.

Tour guide

As we humans move deeper into the age of the machine, the human need for “real experiences” actually becomes stronger.  Research shows that experiences bring people more happiness than their possessions.  This is where outbound and adventure tourism can step in to meet the growing demand.  People who work in modern adventure tourism can expect increased demand for authentic experiences in unique locations.

Journalism

Robots can write (sort of), but no robot or piece of software can act like a human mind when it comes to delving into a story in search of the truth.  Good journalism will always be required.  In fact, in the “content era” we live in now, good writing is becoming an increasingly rare commodity.  Interesting stories from real writers that readers want to share on their social networks are greatly appreciated.

Primary medical care, treatment, care and child care

Robots are used in medicine, including surgery.  Some of them are even used for remote medical procedures.  However, the underlying technology of medical robots is still far from reaching a point that can be compared to how human primary care physicians do.  To date, no conceptual technologies have been developed to build robots good enough to replace therapists, caregivers, and childcare workers.  It all boils down to empathy and connection.  Machines lack these two attributes that are essential in providing effective healthcare and assistance to children and the elderly.

Senior lawyers will not have to worry when it comes to moving jobs. Inferring across domains, gaining client trust, applying years of courtroom experience, and having the power to impress a jury are all examples of cognitive complexities, strategies, and patterns of human interaction that go beyond the capabilities of AI. However, a lot of paralegal and preparatory work such as reviewing and analyzing documents, creating contracts, handling small cases and packing cases, and arriving at recommendations can be done better and more efficiently using AI. The costs of the law make it feasible for AI companies to go after AI paralegals and AI junior lawyers, but not senior lawyers.

Psychiatry

Psychiatry, social work, and marital counseling are all occupations that require strong communication skills, empathy, and the ability to gain clients’ trust. These situations require intense emotional intelligence, professionals who can communicate with patients, comfort patients in times of trauma, and provide long-term support. These are all weaknesses of the machines.
