Description

  • The Water Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for maintaining the water plant ensuring that the water is treated and tested to remove unwanted substances to ensure that staff and contractors in the field have safe and clean water in accordance with legislation, policies and standards.
  • The operator operates the equipment, controls the processes, maintains and monitors the plant for efficient performance.
  • HSE Policy compliance – Perform work by complying with HSE policy, guidelines, procedures and rules. Attend daily PTW and Toolbox meetings, Use, store and maintain your PPE in good condition.
  • Plant Operation – Operate the plant within design operating parameters in line with acceptable standards Ensure proper chemicals are added. monitor the plants operating conditions, regulate and control water during the treatment process. Monitor the pump stations, elevated storage tanks, motors, valves, and gates for efficient performance.
  • Water Distribution – Regulate and monitor the distribution of treated water to various end-users – Project site, Gas plant, Flow station and the Community.
  • Preventive Maintenance – Carry out routine checks and inspections on the plant. Clean and maintain equipment, tanks, filter beds to ensure the safe and efficient performance of the system.
  • Plant Servicing – Maintain the plant inefficient operating mode by carrying out bi-weekly servicing and regeneration of parts such as overhead tank micron cartridge, aerator tower louvers and trays, sand/carbon filters and back-washing of the PH correction vessel. Ensure proper flushing and washing of filters on ozone reaction tank. Provide support to generate list of materials required for servicing and procurement.
  • Planned Maintenance Program – Follow up and adhere to the planned maintenance programme of the plant. Quarterly change-out of the water sterilizer micron cartridges, bi-annual cleaning and disinfection of the overhead and surface tanks, bi-annual servicing of the hydro-calcit, process pumps and the ozone unit. annual cleaning and dislodging of the reaction/ sedimentation tanks as well as annual discharging and re-charging the media filter vessels and the pH correction vessel.
  • Waste management – Ensure all wastes generated in the unit are collected for proper disposal. Carry out good housekeeping to keep the operating area clean and tidy.
  • Quality Control / Assurance – Maintain proper process control/instrumentation, ensure correct application of chemicals, carry out regular water sampling and analysis to ensure consistent and satisfactory results of the treatment plant.
  • Record keeping – Monitor and maintain records and logs of treatment chemicals, operating gauges/parameters, preventive maintenance and waste streams. Provide inventories and clear records of materials and supplies received, used and held in stock. Provide clear documentation of activities including handover note to your reliever.
  • Team work – Attend bi-weekly HSE Unit meetings. Provide support for teamwork. Take part in all planned safety awareness programs.
  • Training – Participate in any organized   training that will enhance   proper operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant
  • Hazard Incident Reporting (HIR) – Take part in hazard incident reporting. Report all unsafe acts and unsafe conditions and near miss observed while working in the facility.
  • HSE Meetings & ERP – Participate in bi-weekly HSE meetings and Emergency response drills / exercises to familiarize with HSE performance and emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Maintain and operate the filtering and chemical treatment processes
  • Inspect, service and repair components of the water treatment plant including water intakes, pipes, water storage vessels, chemical treatment equipment controls, circulation pumps, boilers, heat exchangers and valves
  • Ensure an adequate supply of water for human consumption and firefighting activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sciences / Social Sciences E.g. Chemical Engineering/ Occupational Health
  • Master’s degree in Occupational Health, Safety and Environment will be an added advantage
  • HSE professional qualification is required
  • Additional related qualifications will be a definite added advantage

Preferred Skills:

  • Have a working knowledge of basic machinery preventive maintenance and repair.
  • Have a basic knowledge of regulatory rules governing water discharges and worker’s safety Experience in HSE Documentation / Project Documentation development & Project specific HSE Documentation. (HAZOP, HAZID, Qualitative Risk Assessment, Incident Investigation & Audits).

  • At least 5 years recent and relevant experience in a similar role in the Oil & Gas industry.
  • Ability to Perform daily checks of the water treatment process and periodic checks of pump stations.
  • Have a working knowledge of the operation, methods and procedures of a water treatment plant. Have a working knowledge of the machinery used for water treatment and pumping stations. Have a thorough knowledge of mechanical equipment and the ability to diagnose and correct equipment malfunction.

  • Experience: Minimum experience of 8 years.
  • Other experience: At least 5 years recent and relevant experience in a similar role in the Oil & Gas industry.
