Job Title: Laboratory Technician

Location: Ikeja, Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time

Overview

  • The laboratory department is one of the important segments required to offer quality services to patients in our clinic.
  • We expect our Laboratory technicians to treat our patients with utmost professionalism, attend to patients promptly, and relate with them with respect and kindness.

Responsibilities
The day to day routine task of BeaconHealth a Laboratory technician includes five key responsibilities which are:

  • Treat all patients with absolute care and courtesy irrespective of their age.
  • Performing laboratory tests including pre- and post-analytical phases
  • Preparing samples/specimens
  • Assist Lab scientist to produce accurate and reliable data and interpret results
  • Ensure continuous sanitation of the laboratory environment.

Below are the guidelines to the job expectations and responsibilities associated with these key tasks:
Treat all patients with courtesy:

  • Welcome each patient with a warm smile and make them feel relaxed.
  • Welcome them with courteous greetings like “Good day sir/ma, how do you feel? Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.”
  • If the result of the test shows a bad result, never make the patient feel scared or sad about it.
  • Maintain patient confidence and privacy by keeping laboratory information confidential.

Perform laboratory tests:

  • Receive and process samples to identify suitability.
  • Assist in buffers mixing required for processing patient specimens in lab.
  • Be involved in experiments delivery and label solutions.
  • Perform laboratory testing, including pH and bacterial culturing.
  • Follow methodologies in carrying routine tasks.
  • Research relevant topics and gather information/data.
  • Adhere to correct procedures, policies and health/safety guideline.

Preparing samples / specimens:

  • Organize and maintain reagents and equipment.
  • Prepare samples for testing using various types of laboratory equipment.
  • Coordinate placing orders for inventory supplies needed in lab.

Assist Lab scientist to produce accurate and reliable data and interpret results:

  • Prepare and maintain accurate laboratory record.
  • Keep abreast of all industry developments and best practices
  • Document all activities, record results and insert/retrieve data
  • Make use of the laboratory computer systems to place testing data, generate reports of testing results and search for test results for physicians.

Ensure continuous sanitation of the laboratory environment:

  • Perform maintenance on equipment in the laboratory and keep laboratory in a clean and organized condition.
  • Ensure proper disposal of waste.
  • Provide administrative assistance in the lab.

Requirements

  • Candidates should possess a National Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology
  • Must possess 1 – 3 years of post qualification practicing experience
  • Must be registered with theMedical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) and possess a valid/current license to practice.

Other Requirements:

  • Outstanding thinking and reasoning skills
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and the most popular software packages
  • Ability to work independently, but also as a part of a healthcare team
  • Sensitivity and understanding towards patients during procedures
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to perform well under pressure
  • Physical strength to assist with the lifting or moving of patients to ensure their positioning is correct for the specific procedure.
