The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) is pleased to announce the Storytelling AI  and Tech Accountability Reporting Fellowship, a three-month program designed to empower journalists in Nigeria and Ghana with the tools, expertise, and insights needed to navigate the complexities of artificial intelligence (AI) in today’s world.

The AI and Tech Accountability Reporting Fellowship is a program designed to support journalists and media professionals in investigating the role of artificial intelligence and technology in shaping public life. The fellowship provides funding, mentorship, and resources to help fellows produce investigative reports that scrutinise the ethical implications, transparency, fairness, and accountability of AI systems and technological advancements.

In an age where AI is reshaping everything from governance and economic structures to the way we consume news, it is important that its impact is understood and communicated effectively, especially in Africa. Yet, much of AI’s influence on the continent remains underexplored. This fellowship provides a unique opportunity for journalists to deeply explore the ethical, economic, and social implications of AI, while crafting explanatory and insightful stories that examine its role in African society.

Fellows will engage critically with AI’s transformative potential, from its promises of innovation to the challenges it presents in sectors like healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance. Through this fellowship, journalists will have the chance to report on the societal impact of AI and technology, including issues like algorithmic bias, surveillance, data privacy, automation, disinformation, and the role of big tech companies in governance and regulation. By blending AI knowledge with journalistic integrity, the AI and Tech Accountability Reporting Fellowship will empower a new generation of reporters to produce in-depth articles, multimedia reports, or investigations that highlight issues surrounding AI ethics, regulation, and societal consequences. Who Can Apply?

We welcome applications from:

  1. Journalists, researchers and media professionals in Nigeria and Ghana, especially those with experience in tech reporting or a keen interest in AI, ethics, and digital policy.
  2. Reporters with a strong interest in covering AI’s impact, challenges, and opportunities in Africa.
