Job Description

  • We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Payable Accountant to join our finance team. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the smooth and accurate processing of accounts payable transactions for our retail and supermarket operations.
  • As a Payable Accountant, you will be responsible for managing accounts payable functions in a dynamic retail environment.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in retail accounting, be well-versed in inventory-related transactions, and possess strong organizational and analytical skills.

Job Functions / Responsibilities

  • Process and reconcile supplier invoices for both the retail pharmacy and supermarket operations.
  • Verify inventory-related transactions, ensuring accuracy in quantity and pricing.
  • Collaborate with purchasing and receiving teams to resolve discrepancies in deliveries and invoices.
  • Assist in monitoring and controlling inventory levels to minimize stockouts and overstock situations.
  • Process weekly payment runs for suppliers, ensuring adherence to payment terms.
  • Coordinate with the finance team to optimize cash flow and prioritize payments based on operational needs.
  • Reconcile payments made with supplier statements to maintain accurate records.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards and regulatory requirements for retail operations.
  • Prepare periodic reports on accounts payable aging, cash flow, and other relevant metrics.
  • Assist in internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations.
  • Maintain positive relationships with suppliers and vendors to facilitate efficient communication and issue resolution.
  • Negotiate payment terms and discounts with vendors to optimize cash flow and reduce costs.
  • Regularly communicate with suppliers regarding invoice inquiries and discrepancies.
  • Collaborate with the inventory management team to reconcile accounts payable with inventory records.
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of cost of goods sold (COGS) and related accruals.
  • Any other duties assigned by the Finance Manager

Requirements / Qualifications

  • At least 4 years of experience working in an accountants’ practice in a commercial and structured environment;
  • In a retail or supermarket setting is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration.
  • Understanding of cost control measures and negotiation skills with suppliers.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize daily workload with minimum supervision
  • Exceptional organizational skills and impeccable attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information.
  • High level of energy and enthusiasm.
  • Fully qualified Accountant with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance;
  • Strong experience in dealing with VAT, PAYE, Corporation tax and other such;
  • Experienced using Quick Book, Sage, Excel, Word, and other common software;
  • Familiarity with inventory accounting and retail-specific transactions.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced retail environment.
