Overview

  • Gender Based Violence (GBV) is a public health and social development concern with far-reaching consequences for survivors, perpetrators, families, broader society, and economies and primarily affects women and girls, though boys and men also experience it.
  • GBV is driven by structural inequalities and unequal power relations that render women subordinate to men, due to limited access to education, employment, finances, and healthcare and opportunities to contribute to their family, community, and country’s economic growth. Currently, there is growing recognition of the prevalence of various forms of gender-based violence (GBV) According to the Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2018, 31% of women aged 15-49 years have experienced physical violence at least once and 13.7% of the women surveyed had experienced physical violence within the 12 months preceding the survey.
  • The proportion of women aged 15-49 who reported sexual violence at least once in their lifetime was 9.1%. in Nigeria for instance, 30 per cent of girls and women aged between 15 and 49 reported to have experienced sexual abuse. Also, with 43 per cent of girls married before the age of 18, while 20 per cent of women aged 15 to 49 have undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
  • Once girls in Nigeria are married, only 1.2 per cent of those aged 15 to 19 have their contraception needs met, leading to high levels of early and teenage pregnancy.
  • The Momentum Country Global Leadership (MCGL) project, is a five-year multi-country award funded by USAID to provide more tailored solutions at preventing gender-based violence and expanding access to survivor-centered gender-based violence services nationally and with specific focus on Sokoto and Ebonyi States.
