About Ethereum Foundation Academic Grants Round


Exciting news from the Ethereum Foundation! They’re thrilled to announce the commencement of the Academic Grants Round 2024, an initiative aimed at nurturing research within the Ethereum ecosystem.

Building on the resounding success of the 2023 round, which saw the funding of 43 projects across 20 countries, they are eager to continue their support for academic endeavors.

This round, they are casting a wide net across various domains, including applied and theoretical cryptography, economics, game theory, security, consensus protocols, formal verification, peer-to-peer networking, societal implications, regulations, and hardware. The goal is to ignite research that drives the Ethereum ecosystem forward.

The Foundation is seeking proposals that not only resonate with their wishlist but also introduce innovative perspectives and methodologies. They encourage applicants to draw inspiration from the wishlist and approach their research with creativity.

Here’s a breakdown of the Research Domain Areas:

  • Econ & Game Theory
  • Theoretical and Applied Cryptography
  • Consensus/Protocol
  • Networking & Peer-to-Peer
  • Client Engineering
  • Security
  • Formal Verification
  • Humanities

Participation in this grant round offers several benefits:

  • Up to $1 million in total funding, to be distributed among selected projects.
  • Project durations of 6 to 12 months, with some flexibility based on the project proposal.

To be eligible for participation, projects must:

  • Produce formal academic research.
  • Ensure that research output is open-access with a free and permissive license.
  • Welcome individual researchers with academic backgrounds, research centers, universities, think tanks, educators, and other stakeholders interested in Ethereum-related research. Undergraduate researchers must have a postdoctoral advisor.

The following are not eligible:

  • Anything illegal within the jurisdiction where the work is conducted.
  • Financial products and services such as trading platforms, investment products, stablecoins, lending or betting platforms, etc.
  • Art projects or social impact projects outside the scope of this round.
  • Projects seeking retroactive funding.
  • Projects planning a token launch or public funding round.
