Call For Applications: Maynard 200 Fellowship Program 2024 for Editors & Managers

In 2024, the Maynard 200 Fellowship presents a transformative opportunity for frontline editors and managers, offering a comprehensive professional development training and year-long mentorship program.

Key Program Components:

  • Customized Curriculum: Addressing critical issues, challenges, and tensions faced by editors and managers in the newsroom, especially those transitioning to higher leadership roles.
  • Stellar Faculty: Led by journalism executives and relevant experts, providing tactical coursework to build fundamental editing and management proficiency.
  • Fellowship Experience: Two weeks of in-person training rounds, supplemented by additional sessions, office hours, and year-round program support.

Program Highlights: Training Week 1 (March 11-15, 2024): Editing Leadership

  • Building trust and effective editing relationships
  • Coaching for story & Editing triage
  • Finding the heart of the story through 5 focusing questions
  • Hands-on Editing & Hands-on Writing workshops
  • Evaluating and coaching successful story pitches
  • Managing major coverage projects
  • Developing and managing breaking news coverage
  • The Fault Lines® Methodology
  • Gallup Strengths Assessment & 1:1 Coaching

Training Week 2 (July 15-19, 2024): Management Leadership

  • Coaching Workshops: Success in Management & Effective Leadership
  • Leading Difficult Conversations and Managing Conflict
  • Managing through Authenticity
  • Managing Up, Down and Across Generations
  • Building Resilience & Mental Well-Being in Teams
  • Negotiation Strategies
  • Fault Lines® in Management
  • Nuanced frameworks and cultural competency for covering the Middle East crises and 2024 U.S. presidential elections.

Cost Details:

  • Tuition-free, thanks to generous funders.
  • Maynard Institute covers hotel lodging for the first training week in March.
  • Fellows/employers cover airfare and/or ground transportation to Fort Worth, Texas for March.
  • For the second training week in July, airfare and hotel accommodations are covered by the Maynard Institute.
  • Travel allocations for international fellows are capped.

Eligibility:

  • Open to all, with a commitment to addressing under-representation in media-related professions.
  • Applicants outside the U.S. must be affiliated with or contributing content to a U.S.-based media outlet.

  • 750-1,000 word essay
  • 500-word narrative Bio
  • Work samples (optional)
  • 1 reference letter
